With a intense rhythm of fights, Ronys Torres build a professional record of 14 wins in 15 fights, fighting every two months, and had the chance to fight on UFC. But the two losses on the American octagon were enough for him to be fired from the biggest event on the world. After recharging his batteries in Manaus, the black belt is back to Rio de Janeiro and talked to TATAME, revealing he already has two scheduled fights, commenting his intention to fight as much as he can and the triumphs on his team on the United States and in Japan, besides the entrance of Willamy Chiquerim on UFC.
You took these two months off to stay with your family, rest and forget what happened on UFC, right?
Well, I can say I had a good rest, it was too much in fact… I didn’t train there, I just chill with my friends and family to recharge the batteries and start it all over again. I’m renew, my head is still up, so let’s keep the work I was doing and make it all again so I can come back there, that’s my wish.
When will you fight?
I’ll fight on August 14 against Adriano Martins, a rematch. He asked for this rematch, so I’ll fight him. I should fight on September too. The guys are trying to bring these two fights to Manaus, so it’s almost set.
Will we see Ronys fighting 8 to 10 times a year again?
That’s what I was talking about with Dedé (Pederneiras), we were joking about it… I said I would try to break my own record and do the biggest possible number of fights. If I can fight every month, I will… I’m on the battle again, we’re alive.
On which division will you fight?
On the until 70kg. Each training that goes by it gets more complicated for us to beat the weight, I stayed for two months in Manaus without doing anything, only eating and eating… I got to a weight I have never had before, I had 91kg, I was chubby. Now I’m training hard, loosing weight, I’m with 87kg now and I’ll keep myself on this division, even if it’s hard for me to reach this weight.
You left and Willamy Chiquerim just got there. What advice would you give him?
In there is to kill or to kill. We’ll focus on his training now, he’ll get there and represent our team on the best possible way. It’s very hard to fight on UFC, it’s complicated, there’s a lot of pressure, but he’s got the tools to make a good career there. We told him to come and train with us, to do a better training for him that the one he’d do in Fotaleza and he must be arriving any minute now. We’ll do our best to help him to make a good career on UFC.
Chiquerim will make his debut against Thiago Tavares, a countryman that has a good standing game and also a good ground game. How do you thing this fight will end like?
I believe it’s a good fight for Chiquerim… He likes to trade punches and so does Thiago. Thiago is coming from an injury, so I believe that Chiquerim is on a better physical conditioning and we’re cheering for Chiquerim to get there and make a good show.
In which division will Amilcar fight on? How is his training going?
Until 77kg. we’re working on his ground game, because he already has a great standing game, so we’re focusing more on the ground game and on his Wrestling, even because he will confront a very good wrestler, so we’re giving him a hard time on the trainings just like we’re doing on Chiquerim’s so that they can do a great job.
Your training partners are Marlon Sandro, in Japan, and José Aldo, on the United States, both with belts, and others that came here, like Renan Barão, who won on his debut, Wagnney Fabiano, who changed to a lighter division… How do you see this success of your training partners on the division below yours?
I’m thrilled because we see the performance of each one of them inside the gym. I consider our gym the best light weight team in the world, so it’s not a matter of chance that we have two belts with us and there are more coming. We get excited, because they’re like brothers to me, we’re very close, so we want them to win and if they’re happy, we’re happy for them. We are very glad with this new belt Marlon won, he really deserves it, he works very hard, comes from a humble family, so I wish him a lot of success and also for Aldo and everybody who is doing a good job.
You are wearing an Argertina’s shirt, but you are cheering for Brazil on Fifa’s World Cup, right?
Yes, I want Brazil to win, but I like the way Argentines play. It’s a tied game, the guys go for it and, for the matter of fact, I have the shirt of Argentina’s team and I don’t have one of Brazil’s (laughs), but I want Brazil to win. I’m just wearing this shirt because their game is today (yesterday). |
