Leo Vieira By Guilherme Cruz

ADCC two times champion, Leo Vieira goes in search of dreamed tri championship in match, whom escaped in final to Rani Yahya in 2007. In interview to TATAME, the black belt talked about ADCC's expectations, that happens in September 26 and 27, inBarcelona, Spain. "It's good, I'm really excited about being back. I have a team that supports me, many friends, everybody training... I'm very motivated and I can't wait", said the Chackmat's team leader, who also talked about conquests in team's first year, the polemical 50-50 guard, the possibility of coming back to BJJ competitions and a lot more.

How is the expectation to reach ADCC's third title this year?

It's good, I'm really excited about being back. I have a team that support me, many friends, everybody training... I'm very motivated and I can't wait.

How are the trainings? Are you focused in Submission?

Besides some kimono competitions until that, with several athletes competing, as Brasileiro de Equipes, in this second half of the year it will have many competitions without kimono in United States and here, now ADCC, then Submission class is already part of our schedule since beginning of the year. We are developing a rough training and we hope to have good results. Another athlete who could be in this year's ADCC is Lucas Leite. He is an excellent athlete, fighting in every championships, he already won high level fighters and he is going great without kimono. He is living in USA and was Grapplers Quest's open weight champion and he represents everything I said. He deserves to be in ADCC, we don't have anyone from our team in his catogory. It's been a long time you're not competing with kimono.

Is Submission you focus now?

Priorities change a little bit, man, after all, I'm a father, I have two kids, a team, so my focus is all in family and team. I like competing and I'll be always motivated to, including with a kimono. The amateur championship we have is what makes me stand still, and I would like that Jiu-Jitsu had a professional part. I have sponsors that support me and I am feeling motivated to compete... Maybe next year I get motivated to fight some kimono competition.

How do you see these competitions that give the prize in cash, as in Emirates?

That's a competition I am not in the mood to fight. I talked to some people in organization, but meanwhile my son was born, one pregnancy after another, and, wanting or not, you have to adapt yourself. Things chance, Your routine chance... When I was adapting, a girl has come... I am adapting to my children and now training to ADCC... The important is that I am feeling good, motivated.

And your son, did he trained Jiu-Jitsu already?

Yes, he did, went to the gym, keeps smiling, walking around... It's nice to see this new fase in life, knowing values, to get the family situation, the relationship with the father, you start to look different to your father.

Your son has one year and three months, and Checkmat just complete one year. What's the balance you make about this really young team that make so many things?

We completed one year and were champions in some championships, like European, Pan-Americano, third position in another one, as BJJ Worlds... It's above our team's expectations. It's all reflex of training e dedication of each one inside the team, each one knowing his value on team, and, of course, we expect better things to next year.

Since Chekmat was born, what else change in your life?

I wasn't independent before, and change this way, me having independence to lead a team, have my own business. Now we have gyms all around BRASIL / BRAZL and the world and they have independence. We know how far we can go, we have organization inside the team, people who doesn't think only about themselves, but dedicating to something bigger and better. That's our differential, that put us on podium, even being a young team.

What's the expectation to next year? Do you think about winning the Worlds, passing by teams as Gracie Barra and Alliance?

Who is there will give the life to this happens. It's obvious we are talking about teams that have more than ten years of tradition, and it's not easy to break this down. I think we are surpassing a lot, but I trust and believe very much in what I got and I know that my athletes, wherever they are, are going to sacrifice themselves. We don't expect to be the first, to win, be the champion, we expect that every single athlete be a champion and gives his best out there. If that happens, the winning comes with everyone effort.

How was your trainings with Kid Yamamoto?

Was a really good experience, you trained a lot, create a great friendship. His father is an Olympic wrestler and besides his limited knowledge on the floor, he's a really good Wrestling fighter, a good person. We passed a lot of time together, almost a month of training. I've been there in Japan to his fight and he loves Jiu-Jitsu, loves to train, put the kimono on once in a while, he is humble, fight Muay Thai... He's too light to his category, that's 65kg... After lunch he was weighing 62kg (laughs). As a professional he's a talented guy, and as a person is one of the most disciplined whom I worked. Besides him, I helped on BJ Penn's trainings for his last UFC's fight (against Kenny Florian).

Anderson told that Yamamoto was between three MMA's better fighters, pound for pound. Do you agree?

Absolutely, to me he is between three too, not just because we already work together, but I was a fan before, it's strategically, strong, dangerous, has a lot of fights with high level Brazilian fighters on his curriculum, I understood why he had such excellent results.

Who are the other two you would point between world's betters?

Anderson Silva on the top of this list, because he is showing total control on his category, and Lyoto Machida. I believe a lot on Demian, who's showing the pure side of the fight, of Jiu-Jitsu on MMA.

Who would you point as Jiu-Jitsu's top three these days?

Roger Gracie, o Cobrinha, for all his history, fights and discipline, in third I'd put Aryzinho (Ary Farias), who's in brawn and suddenly will get the black... He is Ricardinho's student and won't pass disregarded... He's showing up, doing an excellent work and people will talk about the black belt on that category.

What do you think about the 50-50 guard? Do you consider an evolution on Jiu-Jitsu?

I think that is just like any other guard, that can be used to attack, to tie, to defend... It's an artifice like any other, you may use as you want. We know that because the guard was developed and we a little together at the time. The controversy is just because its unknown by a big part of teams and that scares a little bit, create a mystery, but later everyone will know, attack, defend, starting on it naturally, will chance the focus when something else appears. It's part of Jiu-Jitsu's evolution. Try to forbid will make it harder a take the Jiu-Jitsu's essence away, that preach all creativity and variety of blows.
